Shockwave Therapy
Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)
What is Shockwave Therapy?
Despite the name, there are no electric shocks involved. Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy sound waves (acoustic pulses) to treat chronic pain in muscles, tendons, and joints. Originally used to break up kidney stones, this technology has been refined to "reboot" the healing process in injured soft tissue.
How Does It Work?
When these sound waves are directed at an injured area, they create a "therapeutic micro-trauma." This sounds scary, but it’s actually a controlled way to tell your body to start healing again.
• Boosts Blood Flow: The waves stimulate the growth of new blood vessels, bringing oxygen and nutrients to the injury.
• Breaks Down Calcification: It can help dissolve calcium build-ups (common in shoulder and heel injuries).
• Reduces Pain: The pulses help "confuse" pain sensors and stimulate the release of endorphins.
• Dissolves Scar Tissue: It helps break down old, stiff scar tissue, allowing the area to become flexible again.
What Should I Expect During Treatment?
• Preparation: Your clinician will apply a clear gel to the skin. This helps the sound waves travel efficiently into your body.
• The Sensation: You will feel a series of rapid "taps" or pulses. While it can be slightly uncomfortable—especially since we are treating an already sore area—it should not be "painful."
• Communication: Your clinician can adjust the intensity at any time. If it feels too intense, just say so!
• Duration: Most sessions are very quick, usually lasting between 5 to 10 minutes per area.
After the Session
• Immediate Relief: Many patients feel a "numbness" or significant pain reduction immediately after the session.
• Temporary Soreness: It is normal to feel a bit "achy" or see slight redness/bruising for 24–48 hours. This is actually a sign that the healing response has been triggered.
• Activity: You can walk and perform daily tasks immediately. However, we recommend avoiding high-impact exercise (running, jumping, heavy lifting) for 48 hours after each session.
• Medication Note: Avoid anti-inflammatory meds (like Ibuprofen or Advil) and ice packsfor 48 hours, as these can dampen the "pro-healing" inflammation we are trying to create.
Success & Timing
Most patients require 3 to 5 sessions, spaced about one week apart. While some feel better instantly, the "true" biological healing usually peaks around 6 to 12 weeks after your final session.
Important Safety Check
Please let your clinician know if you:
• Are pregnant.
• Have a cardiac pacemaker.
• Are taking blood-thinning medication (like Warfarin).
• Have had a steroid injection in the area within the last 6 weeks.
