TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS

Trigger point injections (TPI) involve injecting a local anesthetic (often combined with a corticosteroid or saline) directly into a "knot" or tight band of skeletal muscle (a myofascial trigger point). By interrupting the sustained muscle contraction, TPIs offer several key clinical benefits:

• Breaks the Pain-Spasm Cycle: The local anesthetic disrupts the pain signals sent to the central nervous system, immediately relaxing the taut muscle fibers.

• Reduces Referred Pain: Trigger points often radiate pain to adjacent areas (e.g., neck trigger points causing tension headaches or gluteal trigger points causing lower back/leg pain). Deactivating the primary knot resolves this distant pain.

• Persistent muscle knots restrict flexibility and lengthen the involved muscle fibers abnormally. Relaxing the muscle allows patients to regain normal joint movement and functional range of motion.

3. Improves Local Blood Flow & Tissue Healing

• Constricted, hyper-contracted muscle tissue chokes off local capillary blood supply (ischemia). Inactivating the trigger point restores normal perfusion, delivering oxygen and nutrients while helping flush metabolic waste products out of the tissue.

• Severe pain often prevents patients from performing necessary physical therapy exercises or stretching. TPI acts as an effective bridge, providing a window of relief so patients can tolerate active rehabilitation and chiropractic care more comfortably.
